The medieval period of Indian history, from the eighth to seventeenth century, witnessed significant changes in the educational system under Muslim rule. With the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughal Empire, Islamic patterns of education replaced the earlier Vedic and Buddhist traditions, bringing new institutions, curricula, and methods of learning.

Education during this period was broadly divided into primary and higher stages. Primary education was imparted in maktabs, where children learned basic literacy, arithmetic, and religious instruction. Higher education was provided in madrasas, which emerged as major centres of learning. Renowned madrasas such as Muizzi, Nasiri, and Firuzi in Delhi, and Mahmud Gawan’s madrasa in Bidar, played an important role in intellectual life. These institutions were generally supported by rulers, nobles, religious endowments, and public donations.

The curriculum in madrasas was classified into traditional (manqulat) and rational (maqulat) sciences. Traditional subjects included theology, Islamic law, history, and literature, while rational sciences comprised logic, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and geography. Over time, especially under the Mughals, greater emphasis was placed on rational and secular subjects. Emperors like Akbar and Humayun encouraged translations, scientific learning, and vocational education, contributing to a more inclusive curriculum.

Madrasa education emphasised discipline, close teacher-student relationships, oral instruction, and practical learning. Although education was largely male-dominated due to social restrictions such as purdah, women from elite families often received education at home. Overall, medieval education in India reflected a synthesis of religious, intellectual, and vocational aims, shaping a structured yet evolving educational tradition.
