Recent trends in Indian history reflect a broad transformation in the understanding and writing of the past. Indian history has moved beyond a narrow political narrative to include social, religious, cultural, and economic dimensions. Early historical consciousness in India was shaped by traditions such as Jainism and Buddhism, which emphasised ethics, karma, ahimsa, and monastic life. These traditions brought major social and cultural changes and generated a rich literature in Pali, Prakrit, and Sanskrit, making history accessible to common people.

Another important trend is the recognition of Ithihasa-Purana traditions, epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and classical works such as Rajatarangini, which combine mythology, genealogy, and historical narrative. Though not modern history in method, they preserve valuable historical memory. Medieval history under scholars such as Barani, Abul Fazl, and Ferishta introduced chronicles, administrative records, and biographical writing.

Colonial history marked a decisive phase, often interpreting Indian history through Eurocentric and imperial lenses. This provoked a strong nationalist response, where Indian historians sought to reclaim the past, restore national pride, and counter colonial bias. In the 20th century, Indian history further diversified with Marxist, regional, and interdisciplinary approaches, focusing on marginalised groups, the economy, and society. Thus, recent trends in Indian historiography emphasise critical analysis, a plurality of sources, and a more inclusive understanding of India’s past.
