The term ‘dharmavijaya’ is found in the Theravada tradition of the Buddhism. It signifies ‘victory by Dharma instead of military force’. It underscores the importance of ethical conduct in attaining success. The 13th Major Rock Edict of Ashoka marks a pivotal moment in the history of ancient India and the Mauryan Empire. This edict, issued after the devastating Kalinga War, reflects Emperor Ashoka’s significant transformation from a military conqueror to a ruler who believed in the victory through moral righteousness. Ashoka, filled with remorse from the suffering caused by his killing and exiling lakhs of people, publicly embraced Buddhism and committed himself to governing by its principles of non-violence and compassion. The war, thus, brought about a change in Ashoka and also a significant change in state policy, promoting welfare and moral conduct over conquest and expansion, a policy referred to as Dharmavijaya.
